The healthier your mouth is, the less likely you are to be carrying around a few extra pounds when you eat right and remain active. If you have gum disease, you are almost ensured to have a few extra pounds since your body is constantly fighting to keep down inflammation.
How Gum Disease Can Impact Your Weight
Gum disease can do a number of things. First, it causes damage to your gums. If left untreated, this can even go so far as to lead to tooth loss. Next, it can lead to an increased risk of many different physical ailments. You can be at higher risk to develop heart disease, have a stroke, or even develop diabetes. Finally, if you do not have gum disease treated, you can also end up adding pounds to your body. The longer this goes on untreated, the more weight you are likely to put on.
If you want to be able to reduce that weight, you need to come in and get your gum disease treated. The constant inflammation in your mouth leads your body to go into what is commonly called fight or flight mode. This makes it to where your body is constantly trying to heal, and it holds on to everything that comes in by way of food, in case it needs those nutrients to heal the sick parts of the body.
